Preventing Sun Overexposure

Prevention remains the key to avoiding the consequences of overexposure to the sun.

  • Use sunscreens with UVA and UVB protection. Use SPF 15 or greater and apply 30 minutes before exposure. Your safe exposure time is increased as a multiple of the SPF rating number (10 minutes becomes 150 minutes).
  • Wear sunglasses rated to protect against ultraviolet light.
  • Avoid sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.
  • Medications such as sulfa drugs, tetracyclines, and some diuretics may increase risk of sunburn.
