Transmission

The influenza virus is spread via airborne droplets of respiratory fluids by coughing and sneezing and by direct physical contact with hands and face which may also harbor the virus. The highest incidence of infection occurs in children ages 5 to 14 because schools are an excellent place for transmission of the virus.

After contact with the virus symptoms usually appear within 2 to 4 days. The infection is considered contagious for another 3 to 4 days after symptoms appear.
